New Politics for the New Year

This week’s guilty plea from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff shows that we’re still a long way from putting the Republican ethical scandals of 2005 behind us. Last year revealed the extent to which special interest money corrupts politics, further tarnishing the image of public service in the eyes of an already cynical public.
There is a right way and a wrong way to approach politics and the honor of public service through elected office. 2005 showed us the damage that can be done to our country and our democracy when politicians do it the wrong way. I hope that in 2006 we can chart a better path, stripping the lobbyists and special interests of power and returning it to the people who make this country great.
This New Politics starts right here in Northwest Michigan, starting with a representative who makes sure our priorities are heard over the din of special interest influence in Lansing. Together we can make 2006 the year we made sure our representatives are truly representing us.
It’s the New Politics for a New Year. Happy New Year!
